Nico Technologies gives special attention to extending the application of advanced composite materials in medicine. Our focus area in biomaterials is the manufacturing of materials for neural implants for the stimulation of brain tissues. The same materials will also make possible neuroprosthetic devices for better artificial limbs. Careful design of these materials using LBL assembly technology leads to combinations of properties that are unavailable in any other state-of-the-art materials currently used for neural implants. These properties include mechanical compliance, biocompatibility, low impedance, corrosion resistance, and charge injection capacity. Nico Technologies is developing ultrasmall neural electrodes to reduce inflammation of the tissues around them in collaboration with NeuroNexus Inc, another start-up company located in Ann Arbor, MI.
